Massey University 3MT Competition - Masterate


Entries are open to research masters students who are currently enrolled in a research project of 90 points or more.

Finalists will be required to agree to media exposure for their presentation and research as the finals will be filmed and made available to all participating Universities.

Massey University 3MT Prizes

  • Winner: $1000 into a research account (conference or research related expenses), plus travel and accommodation to represent Massey University at the National Inter-University competition.
  • Runner Up: $500 cash
  • Peoples' Choice: $250 cash 

Master's Inter-University Challenge

The 2019 Master's Inter-University Challenge will take place at the University of Otago on Thursday, 22nd August 2019.  For more information please visit University of Otago.

2019 Winner - Morgan Heslop

Morgan Heslop from the School of Veterinary Science won the master’s competition, as well as being crowned the section’s People’s Choice winner.  Her presentation, entitled The cellular scar of stress, highlighted the plight of zebrafish used in scientific research. Her thought-provoking opening got people thinking.

“Imagine spending five years in an empty room with 19 other people. Nowhere to go. Nothing to do. Do you think that would leave you scarred? This is the reality for millions of fish used in research around the world.

2018 Winner - Grace Shallard

The Master's winner title, and $1,000 prize, was awarded to Grace Shallard, a Master's student from the School of Nursing with her presentation entitled ‘Although it’s small, it is precious’. Grace’s presentation looks at the difficult subject of child abuse in New Zealand and the role of nurses in early detection and intervention.

2017 Winner - Courtney Davies

In the master’s category of seven finalists, Courtney Davies, Institute of Natural and Mathematical Sciences, won first prize of $1000 with her research on the potential role of phages (or bacteriophages, are viruses that infect bacteria) in treating antibiotic resistant pathogens, such as tuberculosis.  She went on to represent Massey University at the Masters Inter-University Challenge at Victoria University of Wellington in August 2017 and won.  Congratulations Courtney!

2016 Winner - Siti Anurddin

In 2016, Massey University canine mastitis researcher Siti Anurddin was not only the Massey University Masters 3MT Competition winner but took out the master’s section and $1000 for her study on what causes the potentially fatal condition at the Masters Inter-University Challenge, hosted by Massey University at the Globe Theatre in Palmerston North on 21 September 2016.

Massey University 3MT Information Session

What is the 3MT competition and why participate? What are the eligibility & judging criteria?  Who can attend?, etc.  This session will cover all the basics about why you would want to participate, how the competition is set up, and what to expect if you are competing.

Developing your 3MT Presentation

This session will provide some helpful hints and tips on:

Developing your narrative for the 3MT competition; this is not easy given the short time period and often complex subjects. How do you meet the judging criteria in three minutes?, and how to design a slide with impact and a clear message.

3MT - Writing a Great Speech

Learn top techniques for writing your three-minute speech and five common mistakes speakers make in the competition. Dr Heather Kavan lectures in Speech Writing and will share with you the tips and strategies she wishes she'd known when she was a PhD student explaining her research. When you've finished the session, you'll be on your way to writing a winning speech. Heather has been assisting with 3MT training for a number of years and this is an invaluable workshop for anyone looking to participate.
