Even Modern Apprentices with good literacy competencies usually find that coping with their written work is one of the most demanding tasks that they face. Modern Apprentices with low literacy are, of course, additionally challenged, so further support for their literacy building is needed.
This study, funded by the Tertiary Education Commission via the Department of Labour, is aimed at discovering exemplary practice in literacy learning within the New Zealand government’s Modern Apprentices programme.
In a series of 14 case studies, we have interviewed apprentices, their employers, their literacy tutors, and learning coordinators from the relevant Industry Training Organisations, in order to determine how excellent outcomes for apprentices’ learning may be created.
This approach provides the opportunity for a closely triangulated analysis, drawing on different but possibly complementary perspectives among various stakeholders.
Research involving apprentices is relatively rare internationally, so this study has very good potential to provide insights into apprentices’ learning of national and international significance.
