Dr John Moremon BA(Hons), PGDipMusStud, PhD

Senior Lecturer

Centre for Defence and Security Studies

Professional

I have lectured at Massey University since 2007. I was previously a researcher with the Australian War Memorial (2001), historian with Australia's Department of Veterans' Affairs (2001-06 and 2007), and senior researcher (defence and security) with the Research Branch of the Australian Parliamentary Library (2006-07).  I deliver courses on the Manawatu campus, Auckland campus (video-linked), by distance, and to the New Zealand Army Officer Cadet School, Waiouru. I also supervise research students at Honours, Masters, and PhD levels.

Research

After a period of focus on academic unit administration and teaching, I resumed research active status in 2016 so that most of my research outputs post-date that period. My projects encompass military history and war and society. I received the Royal Australian Air Force Heritage Fellowship (Research) in 2018 to write a book on RAAF rotary wing (helicopter) operations during the Cold War. In addition to research outposts listed, forthcoming publications include:

- [in press, chapter] "'No written word can express the sympathy of a spoken word': Casualty Telegrams after the Battle for Bardia, 1941," in Amanda Laugesen & Catherine Fisher (eds.), Expressions of War in Australia and the Pacific: Language, Trauma, Memory, and Official Discourse (Palgrave Macmillan)
- book chapter on the Royal New Zealand Air Force in the Pacific War, World War II;
- journal article on the "Tommy gun" (Thompson submachine gun) in jungle warfare, 1942;
- journal article on aircraft recognition in the Pacific War.

Fellowships

- Royal Australian Air Force Heritage Fellowship (Research), 2018-20;
- Summer Seminar in Military History (Teaching), Department of History, US Military Academy, West Point, USA, 2010;

- Massey University Representative and Deputy Chair, Palmerston North City Council Defence Heritage Advisory Group, 2019-current.

Education

I completed a BA(Hons) at the University of New England (Australia) (1993), a PhD in Military History/War Studies at the University of New South Wales Canberra (2000), and a Postgraduate Diploma in Museum Studies at Massey University (2017). I am currently studying for a Postgraduate Diploma in Education (Tertiary Teaching) at Massey. I have also completed Mauri Ora National Certificate in Māori (Te Waharoa), Level 2 (2014) and He Papa Tikanga Tōkaitahi Tikanga (Mātauranga Māori), Level 3 (2019), through Te Wānanga o Aotearoa.

I reseach and lecture in the history of warfare and war and society. My research centres on armed forces and society, including wartime loss and bereavement; the Pacific War, World War II; and air power. I am the 2018-20 Royal Australian Air Force Heritage Fellow (Research), writing on rotary wing (helicopter) operations. For a recent open source sample of war and society scholarship, see my chapter "Another Country's Flag, Another Country's Servicemen: Rosenthal's Photograph and Commemoration of the US Marine Corps in Australia and New Zealand", in Investigating Iwo: The Flag Raisings in Myth, Memory, & Esprit de Corps (2019).
