I am a member of two research groups within the School of Management: the Healthy Work Group, and the Sustainability & CSR Research Group. My research concerns the nature and quality of work and its effects on health, sustainability and performance. For this I adopt a socio-technical systems approach, which recognises the range of system elements involved and the inter-relationships between people across these elements. This approach helps to identify organisational and management practices, as well as related social and cultural factors, that have an influence on wellbeing and performance. A sociotechnical systems perspective also requires the collaborative development and implementation of interventions through participation with both internal and external stakeholders of work systems. This perspective complements and overlaps with components of occupational health and safety management, employment relations, human resource management, and social sustainability.
External Research Roles

As an academic in the School of Management I teach courses in HR/ER, Decent Work and Project Management, and I supervise postgraduate students. I am a co-director of the Healthy Work Group - a research team involved in evaluating and addressing psychosocial risks in work, and I chair the human ethics committee in Albany. I have been at Massey University since 2011. Before this I was a self-employed consultant and a researcher with Scion (a Crown Research Institute).
My areas of research interest primarily concern what leads to meaningful and sustainable work and include: psychosocial factors at work, sociotechnical systems design, social sustainability, health and safety culture, and some consequences of unhealthy work including work-related musculoskeletal disorders, workplace bullying and workplace violence.
