BIKES & SAFETY GEAR

Both bikes are a step-through design, suitable for those wearing skirts and baggy pants. Each bike comes with a waterproof bag, to carry materials or computers around the city. Both bikes have easy adjustable seats, for people between 155 and 185 cm’s tall. They also come with locks so you can safely secure them at your destination.

For your safety, helmets and high visibility vests are required during your ride. If fashion is an elemental part of your existence, you’re welcome to use your own helmet and vest. We also recommend you pre-plan your trip using this safe trip map that we developed in partnership with Wellington City Council.

The electric bike is pedal assist. That means you have to pedal to make them work. This design is much safer for people returning to riding bikes for the first time, as the action of pedaling helps with balance and stability. The electric bike assists riders up to a speed of 26km/hr. Beyond this speed, the bike is confident you can do it by yourself, so the motor takes a quick snooze. On a full charge, the bike has an estimated range of 65km.

BIKE SHARE RULES

  • Available to Massey University students and staff only
  • Maximum bike hire time is 90mins
  • Bikes must be returned the same day by 6:00pm weekdays, and 4:00pm weekends.
  • Bikes are for use on roads only, not for off-road mountain biking.

RESPONSIBILITY OF THE RIDER

The Massey University Recreation Department will keep the bikes in great condition, checking tyre pressures, breaks and gear shifting on a weekly basis. While the bike is in your use, it’s your responsibility. We expect the user to return the bike in the same condition it left in. We will seek recovery of costs from the rider if the bike is returned damaged, with missing parts (including the $800 eBike computer), or is stolen. We recommend you secure the bike with the supplied bike lock to an immovable object, and take a photo of it, while you are at your destination.

THE BIKE SHARE STORY

Massey Bike Share is an idea from a 2017 Masters Student, Sherry Shi. Sherry thought Massey students should have access to bikes to run errands around Wellington city. She brought her idea to Campus Co-Lab, where a small team gathered some information and tested the idea. Funding of the bikes was awarded through Massey University Pukeahu Ki Tua contestable funding. The operational costs and administration will be funded by the Massey University Recreation Department.

Massey Bike Share feeds-forward into the Massey University Sustainability Strategy.

TRIAL PHASE

Massey Bike Share is now undergoing a free trial until June 30 2018. During this time, riders are encouraged to provide information on how much time they saved on each trip, and how much the saved in transport/parking costs). It is hoped that the transport savings made in time and cost will offset the ongoing maintenance of both bikes, so they remain free to use.
