Why are there are no instructions for Windows XP or earlier versions of Windows?

Windows XP does not come under the scope of this service as Massey University is phasing out this Operating System (released in 2001). Please contact the ITS Service Desk on ext 82111 to discuss moving to Windows 7.

Why are there are no instructions for Mac OS X 10.5 or earlier versions of Mac OS X?

Mac OS X 10.5 and previous versions do not come under the scope of this service as Massey University is phasing out this Operating System (released in 2007).  Please contact the ITS Service Desk on ext 82111 to discuss moving to Mac OS X 10.6 or above.

When and from where should I perform a backup?

How often you need to backup is quite specific to your workflow, however ITS recommends a maximum time between backups of 1 month.  Most of the time you will need to backup more often than this.

    • A good way to determine the schedule that best suits you is to assess how much time / resource would be lost if your laptop or Macbook was stolen and balance this against the time your backup takes.
    • For best results it is recommended that you perform a backup onsite on the Massey network using a wired (Ethernet cable) connection.

Refer to the  Connection Chart.pdf (196 KB) for recommendations.

Can I backup my business data offsite?

Whilst it is possible to back up your business data off site this is not recommended. You are able to connect to the Massey network to update your backup via an offsite internet connection and Virtual Private Networking (VPN), however this is only recommended for small <2Gb backup tasks.

This recommendation is due to the volume of data that could be sent across the internet to safely transfer your backup to the storage infrastructure. If you are using your home broadband to do this you may use a large amount of your data cap and success of the backup will be based on the reliability of your connection. If you are overseas there may also be additional international charges that apply.

Refer to the  Connection Chart.pdf (196 KB) for recommendations.
