Confirmation of Registration

As well as meeting the requirements of the structured programme, Doctor of Social Work students as with all other doctoral students, are required to undergo an oral defense and submit a honed research proposal as prerequisites for confirmation of thesis registration. This normally takes place once the course work has satisfactorily been completed.

Prospective Candidates

Prospective candidates should:

  • Complete and return the Confirmation Report requested by the Graduate Research School
  • Submit a 3,000-10,000 word confirmation proposal to the confirmation committee via the main supervisor
  • Present orally on their research project for 20-30 minutes at a postgraduate research seminar in the academic unit
  • Defend the proposal in front of the confirmation committee, and demonstrate relevant abilities and knowledge

Main Supervisor

Main supervisors should:

  • Assist the Head of School and candidate

Head of School

Head of School should:

  • Work with supervisor to organise a confirmation committee and assume overall responsibility for the confirmation event, ensuring that it occurs to the deadline notified by the Graduate Research School and that all relevant paperwork is distributed to members of the committee
  • Complete and return the relevant paperwork to the Graduate Research School

Convenor of the Confirmation Committee (If not the Head of School)

Convenor of the Confirmation Committee should:

  • Complete and return the Confirmation Report with all relevant signatures to the Graduate Research School

Doctoral Research Committee (DRC) or Graduate  Research School Administration (GRS)

GRS will send a reminder to the candidate, main supervisor and the Head of Unit two months prior to the due date. The DRC will review the confirmation committee’s report and do one of the following: grant full registration; require the confirmation of registration be deferred for a maximum of 6 months beyond the due-date; or, terminate the candidature. A deferral cannot exceed 6 months from the original due-date. The candidate and academic unit may be required to repeat part or all of the confirmation event. There can only be one deferral.
