I am of Niuean ethnicity working as a Learning Adviosr for Pasifika students at Massey University. I graduated from Massey with a Masters Degree in Management majoring in Internatonal Business. I am passionate about supporting initiatives contributing to the success of Pasifika students. Part of my role involves providing policy adavoccay in areas contributing to student success. This requires establishing wider collaboration and bulding positive working relationships with different stakeholders at Massey, Pasifika communities and beyond. Being a Learning Advisor is an exciting profession as we provide a crucial interface between students, academics and other support services crtitical for success.

Education: I am a school teacher by profession and have done a qualitaive study exploring factors impeding the participation and retention of Pasifika students at tertiary institutions in New Zealand. I am also involved in a number of action research on the following areas: examining the research interests, and factors enabling Pasifika students and staff to doing research; developing mentoring support for first year students; and initiatives targeted at promoting the sucessful transition of Pasifika students into University. My expertise also involves planning and providing academic and learning content for Pasifika and ESOL learners catering for their diverse learning needs.
Economic Development in the Pacific: Prior to working at Massey University I worked as the Head of the Economic Planning Unit, Government of Niue, providing policy advice to government, and managing the portfolio of Trade, Marketing and Investment,Statistics, and Planning. The role also involves preparing funding proposals, managing project funds and project implementation, and preparing progress and aquital Reports for funding agencies.
Management: I spent 2 years working for the Niue Public Service Commission responsible for developing, implementing and monitoring the Performance Management System for the Public Service, and developing and providing Management Training for Public service in the areas of: Supervision, corprate Planning, InductionTraining needs analysis, leadership, communication and other management areas. While working for a Literacy Provider in New Zealand I contributed towards the development of Learning Modules, led the implementation of summative asessments for inmates including quality assurances of assessments, taught numeracy and literacy, and provided Training for Literacy and Numeracy for Tutors from midecentral North Island to the South Island.
Strategic Planning: In 2001 I was tasked with leading the planning and development of Niue's Strategic Development Plan a task which required extensive collboration with heads of departments and key stakeholders (civil society and private sector).This also involves working closely with Departmental head to ensure that key outputs in corporate plans are aligned with the strategic objectives in the National development Plan.
Community Development: I have always had a passion in contributing to initiatives that makes a positive impact to the life of people in the community. I am a Refugee Volunteer, and am involved with my own community. I am also a member of the Pasifika Health Niu Group, an advocacy interdisciplinary group responsible for working closely with key social, health, and other key services to promote the social and economic wellbeing of Pasifika peoples and communities in New Zealand. I have facilitated 2 community consultations to ensure that the wellbeing aspirations of the community are reflected in the Niu Health Plan and informs the priorities of service providers.
Being Pasifika, raised up in the Pasifika and having travelled through teh Pacific, and having worked closely with Pasifika Collegues I have a good knowledge of Pasifika protocol, practices,and culture and therefore feel comptetent to provide sound cultural advice for non-Pasifika working with Pasifika students and communities.
