The Foundation was established by combined Committee comprising representatives of the New Zealand Racing Conference, Harness Racing New Zealand, New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders Association, New Zealand Standardbred Breeders Association, with advisors from Massey University and Lincoln College, in 1976. It became incorporated as a Board in 1981 under the provisions of the Charitable Trusts Act 1957.

This Scholarship will be available to New Zealand citizens or permanent residents studying full time in veterinary science.

The applicants will be fourth year students who plan to work mainly in the equine industry, if not full time. The scholarship will be awarded at the beginning of their final year.

Criteria for assessment will include academic record, curriculum vitae, referee reports, application essay and demonstration of a particular interest in horses. Financial need is not a major criterion but may be taken into account in awarding the scholarship.

The Scholarship will be awarded annually and shall have a value of up to $3,000.

The Selection Committee may award more than one scholarship or may refrain from making any award if there is not an applicant of sufficient merit.

The Scholarship may be held in conjunction with other awards/scholarships.

The recipient/s of this Scholarship will be required to prepare a case study of no more than 1.000 words, suitable for a lay audience and submit same to the NZERF Office no later than 30 November.

The Scholarship shall be awarded by The NZ Equine Research Foundation, a registered Charitable Trust. The Trust is administered by a Board made up of nominees of New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing, Harness Racing New Zealand, New Zealand Racing Board, New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders Association, New Zealand Standardbred Breeders Association, NZ Vet Assn Equine Branch, NZ Pony Clubs Association, Equestrian Sport NZ and Massey University.

Instructions for Applying
Applicants are to complete the application form and are to attach in the following order:

- A short essay (no more than 500 words) on why you want to work in the equine industry including why you deserve to be awarded this Scholarship
- Budget details as to how you would utilise the Scholarship
- Curriculum Vitae
- A written reference from a practitioner (preferably equine) who you have worked with in the last two years
- The names and addresses of two other referees with current knowledge of your activities. One of these referees must be an academic staff member in the BVSc course
- Other tertiary academic transcripts (the Scholarships office prints and attaches Massey transcripts)

Applicants are requested to supply ONE complete set of their application form and attachments by the closing date of 30 September.

Application forms are available on stream to eligible students.

PLEASE NOTE: applications are not available until approximately one month prior to the closing date.

All applications are acknowledged by email.

Application cannot be accepted before 30/06/2019.
